Issue/Introduction

The Log Management retention issues detected alert has triggered in VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) Operations.

The following symptom appears:

• Additional storage required has been observed on ops-logs (Self) Retention|Additional Storage Required (GB) 10 > Threshold (GB) 0.

Environment

• VCF Operations 9.1
• VCF 9.1 - Log Management

Cause

This issue occurs because the Additional Storage Required metric within the Log Management Health dashboard erroneously reports a storage shortfall on clusters where log partitions are left at their default settings (without a user-defined retention period). This non-zero value appears even when ingestion rates are low and ample disk space is available, inadvertently misleading users into believing they need to provision more storage.

Resolution

The metric, along with any symptoms, alerts, and dashboards that depend on this alert, will be deprecated in a future release of VCF Operations.

Workaround:

As the alert can be safely ignored, disable it in the policy.

1. Navigate to Administration > Configurations > Policy Definition.
2. Select the active policy.
3. Click Edit Policy, then click Alerts and Symptoms.
4. Filter for the alert Log Management retention issues detected.
5. Change the State from Activated to Deactivated.
6. Filter for the symptoms Additional shards required, Additional storage required, and Storage imbalance > 20%.
7. Change the State from Activated to Deactivated.
8. Click Save to finish.
