Issue/Introduction

Service mesh modification or deployment in VMware HCX fails with errors during the interconnect service workflow. This issue occurs when the interconnect edge (IXE) appliance fails to configure the static route for the uplink network, resulting in the following error.

Service Mesh creation failed. Process Service Mesh failed. Interconnect Service Workflow ConfigureIXEdge failed.
Error: Configuration update failed for appliance ServiceMesh##-IXE-R1. Reason: Failed to
configure the static route for special route for uplink network on appliance :
######-####-####-####-#############. Error: Each next hop must have either 'ip_address' or
'logical_router_port_id' with valid target_id

Environment

VMware Operations HCX 9.1

Cause

The service mesh deployment fails because the Interconnect appliance requires a valid default gateway in the network profile configuration to route traffic correctly for the uplink network. If this field is left blank or misconfigured, the static route configuration for the uplink network fails with the error.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, update the network profile configuration:

  1. Log in to the HCX Manager interface.
  2. Navigate to Interconnect > Network Profiles.
  3. Identify and select the network profile associated with the failing service mesh deployment.
  4. Review the network profile settings, specifically for the gateway uplink network.
  5. Update the Gateway with the valid gateway IP address for the uplink network.
  6. Save the configuration changes.
  7. Retry the Service Mesh deployment.
