Issue/Introduction

When attempting to upgrade the fleet lifecycle version (e.g., from 9.1.0.0100 to 9.1.0.0300), the upgrade process stalls or fails. Error messages Temporary failure in name resolution indicate an inability to resolve hostnames, specifically affecting the Services Runtime (control plane and worker nodes). Inspection of the /etc/resolv.conf file on the affected nodes reveals missing search domains.

Environment

VCF 9.1

Cause

The DNS search domain parameter is not being correctly injected or persisted within the node's guest OS configuration during the upgrade deployment. This typically occurs when the vApp options associated with the node VM in vSphere do not contain the correct "Domain Search Path" or "Domain Name Servers" settings.

Resolution

Resolution

Workaround (Immediate) If the upgrade process is currently stalled due to DNS resolution failures, you can manually update the domain search path to allow the upgrade to proceed:

  1. SSH into the affected control plane or worker nodes.
  2. Execute the following command to manually add the search domain to the interface: resolvectl domain eth0 <your_search_domain> (Replace <your_search_domain> with the appropriate domain, e.g., example.local).
  3. Confirm the update by checking the status: cat /etc/resolv.conf
  4. Resume the upgrade deployment.
