Content Library Snapshots Cause VAAI Offload Failure in VMware vSphere ESXi

Issue/Introduction

VAAI (vSphere Storage APIs for Array Integration) hardware offloading (specifically XCOPY) does not occur when deploying virtual machines or clones from a Content Library template, even though the underlying storage array reports VAAI support.

Environment

• VMware vSphere ESXi 8.0 and later
• Content Library VM Templates
• iSCSI or Fibre Channel shared volumes
• Storage array supporting VAAI XCOPY

Cause

The Content Library automatically creates a snapshot on the VM template upon import to support native versioning features. VAAI hardware acceleration strictly requires flat virtual disks to function. The introduction of the delta disk (created by the Content Library) automatically breaks the VAAI chain, forcing a host-side software copy, which results in significantly degraded performance.

Resolution

The storage and VAAI infrastructure operate as designed. To restore VAAI functionality, utilize one of the following methods:

1. Deploy templates without snapshots.
2. Use local templates (bypassing Content Library versioning) for automated deployment pipelines where performance is critical.
3. Investigate bypassing the Content Library snapshot behavior or modifying automation pipelines (e.g., Packer) to use local template sources.
