Issue/Introduction

  • Users observe the following licensing warning banner in the NSX Manager user interface:

"NSX Manager is currently operating without a valid license. Warning: To rectify this situation, please verify NSX Manager's license or entitlement from vCenter Server in the next ## days."

  • This issue occurs in environments running NSX version 4.2.x configured with legacy DLF  entitlement keys, such as NSX-T Enterprise Plus.

Environment

VMware NSX 4.2.x

Cause

  • This occurs due to a built-in software check in NSX 4.2.x that specifically scans vCenter Server assets for VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) subscription license objects.
  • Because legacy DLF keys do not register as VCF license objects within vCenter Server assets, the automated check triggers the notification logic and displays the warning banner, despite all features being actively licensed under the legacy key.

Resolution

  • This warning banner is expected behavior for this specific version and license key combination and can be safely ignored.
  • All NSX networking and security capabilities remain fully licensed, entitled, and functional on version 4.2.x. System operation is non-disruptive.

Remediation & Lifecycle Options

  • Banner Removal (Optional): Apply a valid VCF subscription license within the vCenter Server assets to satisfy the software check and suppress the message.

  • Future Lifecycle Planning: Note that starting in NSX release 9.1, support for legacy DLF-based keys will be discontinued. Alignment with subscription/entitlement-based licensing will be mandatory from version 9.1 onward.
