Issue/Introduction

Creating an Idea from a template in the Modern UX sets Start Date and Finish Date to the creation date, even though the template, the create view and the attribute defaults are all blank.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  1. Go to Administration - Studio - Objects - Idea - Attributes and confirm Start Date and Finish Date have no default value.
  2. Go to Views – Fields and ensure there is no Default Overrides
  3. In Classic, Go to Ideas, create an idea with Start Date and Finish Date left blank
  4. Open the idea and confirm Start Date and Finish Date are blank
  5. Now set this idea as a Template
  6. In Blueprints, configure a copy of Idea Blueprint and set up the Create from Template not to have the Start and Finish Date added
  7. Go to MUX - Ideas – Set the Template to be using that Blueprint
  8. Now select New from Template, select that template, enter a Subject and an Idea ID and click Create.
  9. Open the new idea and go to Properties.

Expected Results: Start Date and Finish Date remain blank, matching the template and the attribute configuration.

Actual Results:

  • Both fields are set to the date the idea was created.
  • Creating the idea with the plus button in the Modern UX, or in Clarity Classic, leaves both fields blank.

Resolution

This was reviewed and determined to be Working As Designed:

  • Idea Dates are an exception to the other investment types because they are not defined as 'required'.
  • This is working as designed, especially in the use case for creating an Idea "New from Template," as Staff and Cost Plans have dates.
  • In MUX we force the creation of an idea with dates from a template.
  • If an idea is created using the '+' button for a quick create, the user can have blank dates because no other data relationships depend on them.
  • However, once you start adding Staff or populating Cost Plans, you'll need investment dates for boundaries.

Workaround:

  • None known that keeps the fields blank on the template flow.
  • If fields are added to the Create Template, they will be prepopulated with today’s date instead of being blank
  • You may consider adding some default dates to the templates that would be preferable to today's date
