Issue/Introduction

The _ref URL returned by the Attachment API has changed to use rally1.rallydev.com as the base hostname, regardless of the hostname used in the original API request. This article provides guidance on why this change occurred and how to update integrations to handle this behavior correctly.

Cause

The _ref attribute in the Attachment API response now commonly returns rally1.rallydev.com. This is expected behavior. rally1.rallydev.com is a supported and standard hostname for Rally SaaS API operations. The Rally backend infrastructure uses this endpoint to ensure consistent routing across the platform.

Resolution

To ensure your integration remains robust and avoids service disruptions, follow these best practices:

• Use the URL as returned: Do not attempt to normalize or replace the hostname in the _ref URL with your regional hostname (e.g., us1.rallydev.com). Hardcoding regional hostnames creates fragile dependencies that may fail if routing is updated or resources are migrated.
  
  
• Update Dynamically: Ensure your application parses and uses the _ref attribute dynamically from the API response. This allows your integration to consume the standard endpoints provided by the Rally platform, regardless of the base URL used in the initial request.
  
  
• Verify Workflows: Update any downstream attachment retrieval or processing workflows to accept the rally1.rallydev.com hostname as valid.
