Error: This Operation is denied when enabling thin provisioning in VMware Cloud Director

Issue/Introduction

Attempts to enable thin provisioning on an Organization Virtual Data Center (VDC) in VMware Cloud Director fail with a specific error message. This happens even when the user appears to have "Manage" rights over the Organization VDC.

Symptoms

• "This Operation is denied" error message appears in the VMware Cloud Director UI.
  
• Thin provisioning cannot be enabled on the target Organization VDC.
• No background task is created when the error occurs.
• While trying to edit/view the role assigned to user below error is being encountered: "Required implied right <Component>:<Implied-Granular-view-level-Right> has not been selected for the selected right <Component>:<Implying-view-level-Right>"
  

Environment

• VMware Cloud Director 10.6.x

Cause

The error occurs because the active user role lacks the specific granular rights required to modify storage profiles or Organization VDC properties. In VCD 10.6 and later, rights such as "Organization VDC: Edit" must be explicitly selected, even if broader "Manage" rights are perceived to be active.

Resolution

Please follow the below steps:

1. Log in to the VMware Cloud Director Provider Portal as a System Administrator.
2. Navigate to Administration > Access Control > Roles.
3. Select the role assigned to the impacted support team and click Edit.
4. Navigate to the Organization VDC section and expand the rights.
5. Ensure the following rights are selected:
   • Organization VDC: View
   • Organization VDC: Edit
6. Click Save.
7. Instruct the user to log out and log back in to refresh the permissions.
