High Availability for NSX Edge TEP Groups compatibility with NSX Federation

Issue/Introduction

• VMware NSX version 4.2.1 introduced High Availability for NSX Edge TEP Groups based on the Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) session state, ensuring continuity of workload network traffic when a TEP Group member is brought down.

Environment

VMware NSX 4.2.1 and Later

Cause

High Availability for NSX Edge TEP Group is a feature introduced in NSX 4.2.1 to prevent traffic black-holing by monitoring BFD session states. Edge TEP groups are currently not supported with the following features

1. • Federation (RTEPs)
   • Multicast Routing
   • EVPN
   • IPv6 TEP

 

Resolution

• Review the official NSX-T Data Center REST API Documentation for TepGroupConfig.
• Do not enable this feature if these functionalities are already configured in the environment. If enabled, it must be disabled before configuring Federation.
• Configuring TEP groups with unsupported features may result in unknown behavior and potential impact on network traffic.

Additional Information

There is currently no alternative for Federation customers seeking RTEP-specific high availability via this Edge TEP grouping feature.
