Issue/Introduction

An alarm configured to trigger on the "Lost Network Connectivity" event fails to fire when simulating or experiencing a network disconnection on an ESXi standard switch or distributed switch.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 8.0

VMware vCenter Server 8.0

 

Cause

The "Lost Network Connectivity" event is generated only when active workloads or powered-on virtual machines connected to the port group are affected by the loss of connectivity.

If there are no powered-on virtual machines or vmkernel ports associated with the port group on the switch, the event will not be raised, and the alarm will not trigger.

Resolution

To test or verify the alarm functionality, ensure that the network failure impacts an active workload:

  1. Connect a powered-on virtual machine to the target port group on the switch.

  2. Simulate or trigger the loss of network connectivity.

  3. Verify that the event is generated and the alarm triggers successfully.
