Issue/Introduction

Backup operations are blocked or locked, preventing new backup tasks from executing. Storage utilization has surpassed provisioned limits past the allowed grace period. System audits confirm no orphaned or hung snapshots are present in the environment.

Environment

VMware Live Cyber Recovery (all versions)

Cause

Storage consumption exceeded provisioned limits past the grace period due to unoptimized backup retention policies and Recovery Time Objective (RTO) settings.

Resolution

Follow these steps to reclaim storage space and unlock backup operations:

  1. Perform a snapshot audit to ensure no ad-hoc or manual snapshots are consuming space.
  2. Review and adjust the Retention Policy and RTO configurations for high-frequency Protection Groups.
  3. Allow the automated background Space Reclamation (SR) process to complete.
  4. Monitor storage utilization to ensure it remains below critical thresholds (e.g., #### TiB).
  5. Verify that backup capabilities are restored once utilization drops below the lockout threshold.
  6. Complete any pending capacity expansion or renewal quotes to provide adequate headroom for growth.
