Issue/Introduction

  • Following the recovery of the vCenter Server virtual machine, certain hosts might trigger alarms or present "vSphere HA host status" issues.
  • This scenario can occur if the vCenter Server is hosted on VMware vSAN and a site takeover operation is executed on the site that has undergone maintenance mode.

Environment

VMware vSAN 9.1

Cause

  • Under certain site failure cases, site takeover may result in HA status inconsistency between the vCenter Server and its managing ESXi hosts.
  • This issue arises because FDM  (Fault Domain Manager, which is the core management agent behind vSphere High Availability) lacks a self-healing mechanism when it restarts on a host containing an outdated local host list that excludes the active master.

Resolution

  1. On the vCenter Servr UI, right-click an individual ESXi host showing the warning or alert
  2. Select "Reconfigure for vSphere HA" from the action menu.
  3. Monitor the "Recent Tasks" pane at the bottom of the screen until the task completes successfully.
