Unblocking Stale Transit Gateway and Tier-0 Deletion by Manually Redeploying Edge Nodes

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• User canceled a Transit Gateway (TGW) deployment and manually deleted the Edge VMs from vCenter.
• Subsequent attempts to delete the Tier-0 Gateway and stale references failed in the NSX GUI, even when following standard unbinding procedures in KB 407767 and KB 441894.
• The error encountered when attempting to delete the Tier-0 is below:

"Error: The object Tier-0 Gateway xxxxxx cannot be deleted as either it has children or it is being referenced by other objects: yyyyyy"

Environment

VMware NSX 9.1

Cause

The Tier-0 Gateway remained in a "Referenced" state. Attempts to set TGW connections to 'None' or delete External Connections failed because the underlying transport nodes (Edges) were missing.

Resolution

• Manually remove the inconsistent NSX Edge from NSX Manager UI.
• Manually deploy two new NSX Edge nodes directly from the NSX Manager UI (not vCenter Server).
• Add the new Edge nodes to the existing Edge cluster that is referenced by the stale Tier-0 and Transit Gateway.
• Once the cluster is healthy, refresh and then the status of the Tier-0 and Transit Gateway becomes healthy.
