Error: There are not enough licenses installed to perform the operation in Site Recovery Manager

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Attempting to add a virtual machine to a Protection Group fails.
• The following error is displayed in the Site Recovery user interface: Operation Failed: There are not enough licenses installed to perform the operation.
• The issue typically occurs when the "Site Recovery Manager Standard" license is in use, which is limited to 75 protected VMs per site.

Environment

• VMware Live Site Recovery 9.x
• VMware Site Recovery Manager 8.x

Cause

• This issue occurs because the Site Recovery Manager license capacity has been reached.
• The Site Recovery Manager Standard license allows for a maximum of 75 protected virtual machines per site. If this limit is reached, no additional VMs can be added to any Protection Group.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:

1. Free up existing licenses:
   1. Identify unused or decommissioned virtual machines that are currently protected.
   2. Remove these virtual machines from their respective Protection Groups to return the license seats to the available pool.
2. Upgrade the license:
   1. Assign a "Site Recovery Manager Enterprise" license, which does not have the 75 VM per-site limit.
