Application processes or other monitored services reappear in the Aria Operations UI in a "grey state" (inactive) every 5 minutes even after they have been deleted or the agent has been reinstalled

Issue/Introduction

• Processes show as "No data receiving" or greyed out.
• Deleting the resource from the UI only results in it reappearing shortly after.
• Standard agent reinstallation does not resolve the state.

Environment

VMware Cloud Foundation Operations 9.x

Cause

The telegraf.json (or telegraf.conf) file on the endpoint becomes corrupted or retains stale configuration entries from previous manual troubleshooting or incomplete uninstalls. The agent continues to report these stale resource definitions to Aria Operations.

Resolution

Perform a clean reconfiguration of the agent and switch to the recommended availability metric.

1. Stop the Telegraf and Salt-Minion services on the endpoint.
2. Navigate to the configuration directory:
   • Linux: /etc/telegraf/
   • Windows: C:\ProgramData\VMware\UCP\Telegraf\
3. Back up and remove the telegraf.json or telegraf.conf file.
4. In the Aria Operations UI, go to Workload Management > Applications > Manage Telegraf Agents
5. Select the affected object and perform a Reconfigure on the HTTP/Process endpoints to push a fresh configuration.
6. For downtime monitoring, configure alerts to use the Resource Availability metric (_AVAILABILITY\|Resource Availability_) instead of custom dashboard aggregations.
