Unable to take snapshots via vSAN Data Protection for Virtual Machines (VMs) with Virtual Machine Disks (vmdk) stored on multiple datastores.

Issue/Introduction

When attempting to take a snapshot via vSAN Data Protection (either manually or scheduled) of a VM which has vmdk(s) stored on the local ESA vsanDatastore but also vmdk(s) stored on a different datastore, this task will fail with the below Status messages:

Cause

vSAN Data Protection does not support protection of VMs which have any vmdk(s) stored on any datastore other than the local ESA vsanDatastore.

Resolution

Storage vMotion the vmdk(s) stored on the non-local/non-ESA datastore to the local ESA vsanDatastore.
Alternatively, if the data in the vmdk(s) stored on the non-local/non-ESA datastore is not required for functionality of the VM, then remove these vmdk(s) from the VM.
