Users may inquire about the supportability or timeline for upgrading VMware HCX to version 9.x (including 9.1) within a VMware Cloud on AWS (VMC on AWS) environment, often in preparation for migrations to VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.1.

Cause

Currently, VMware Cloud on AWS does not support the HCX 9.x branch. VMC on AWS SDDCs are designed to operate using the HCX 4.x branch (e.g., HCX 4.11.x). Attempting to upgrade or connect a VMC SDDC to an HCX 9.x environment may lead to compatibility or supportability issues.

Resolution

There is currently no official support or specific timeline for HCX 9.x on VMware Cloud on AWS. Customers should adhere to the following guidance:

1. Maintain Supported Versions: Continue to use the HCX 4.x branch (currently up to 4.11.x) for all VMC on AWS deployments.
2. Verify Interoperability: Always consult the Broadcom Interoperability Matrix before planning upgrades or migrations involving HCX and VMC on AWS.
3. Monitor Release Notes: Updates regarding new version support will be published in the VMware Cloud on AWS Release Notes.
4. Migration Planning: Do not upgrade connected on-premises or peer environments to VCF 9.x if they are actively paired with a VMC on AWS SDDC via HCX, as this configuration is not currently supported.
