Issue/Introduction

  • In an on-premise VMware Cloud Director Availability (VCDA) appliance, the lookup service is unhealthy with an Unconfigured... Timeout status.
  • Attempts to create a new replication result in timeouts.
  • The lookup service address is accessible from the VCDA appliance.
  • Attempts to reconfigure the lookup service appear to succeed.
  • The vCenter providing the lookup service is in linked mode with at least one other vCenter that is not accessible to the vCDA appliance.
  • Connections (e.g., manual connections using curl) from the VCDA appliance to the linked vCenter do not succeed and do not fail immediately.

Environment

VMware Cloud Director Availability 4.7.3.x

Cause

If the vCenter for the configured lookup service provides service endpoints for other vCenters, VMware Cloud Director Availability (VCDA) will attempt to utilize the services at the destination provided. If the connection attempts to the address do not fail or do not progress (e.g., the firewall silently drops packets without a rejection), the connections will remain until timeout, resulting in a variety of issues in the application.

Resolution

To correct the issue, adjust the networking to permit access to all linked vCenter servers in linked mode with the vCenter providing the lookup service.

If access to the linked mode vCenters is not feasible, configure the networking so that attempts to the inaccessible addresses fail immediately.
