Identifying the initiator or source of a task in VMware Cloud Director

Issue/Introduction

  • This article provides instructions on how to identify the user and the client IP address that executed a task in VMware Cloud Director.

Environment

VMware Cloud Director 10.6.x

Resolution

  1. Log in to the VMware Cloud Director Tenant Portal.

     

  2. Navigate to Monitor and check Initiator, and Start Time of the target task.

     

  3. Connect to the VMware Cloud Director cell via SSH as a root user.

     

  4. Change to the following directory:
    cd /opt/vmware/vcloud-director/logs

  5. Run the grep command using the Start Time as shown below to identify the source IP address of the task execution:
    grep "DD/MM/YYYY:HH:MM:SS" *.request.log

    Example:
    # grep "06/Jul/2026:07:15:26" *.request.log
    2026_07_06.request.log:<IP address> - - [06/Jul/2026:07:15:26 +0000]  "POST /api/vApp/vapp-####/power/action/reset HTTP/1.1" 202 1835 "https://####/tenant/####/vdcs/####/vapp/vapp-####/general" "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/145.0.0.0 Safari/537.36" 64
