Error: Unable to deploy VM from template or upload OVA to Content Library in VCF

Issue/Introduction

Attempts to deploy Virtual Machines from templates or upload new OVA files to the Content Library fail. This issue often occurs when using third-party appliances, such as those from Infoblox.

Symptoms:

• Deployment from template fails with a generic error or remains stuck at 0%.
• Uploading an OVA to the Content Library results in an "Unable to process template" error.
• Task failures are recorded in the Recent Tasks pane.

Environment

• VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF)
• VMware vCenter Server 8.x / 9.x
• Content Library

Cause

The issue is caused by a corrupted or malformed OVA descriptor payload from the third-party vendor. The Content Library validation service rejects the file if it does not meet integrity or formatting specifications.

Resolution

• Verify the integrity of the source OVA file with the third-party vendor (e.g., Infoblox).
• Attempt to deploy the OVA directly to an ESXi host using the Deploy OVF Template wizard to bypass the Content Library.
• If the direct deployment fails with an "Invalid response code: 500" or similar error, the file is confirmed to be malformed.
• Obtain a new, validated OVA package from the vendor.
• Upload the validated package to the Content Library and attempt the deployment again.
