Issue/Introduction

  • When managing licenses in the VCF Operations console, users may encounter the following persistent warning alert:

"A change has been made to your environment that will impact your ability to update your license. You must update your VCF Business Services console registration."

  • This alert may appear even if the instance has been successfully registered, or it may be accompanied by secondary errors:

    "License file cannot be updated."
"Unable to connect to VCF Business Services."

Environment

VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.x

Cause

This message is triggered when the VCF Operations appliance detects a mismatch between its local environment metadata (such as node count, infrastructure changes, or Site ID) and the registration record held in the VCF Business Services Console (BSC). It can also occur if the local reporting service has a stale synchronization state with the Broadcom licensing backend.

Resolution

To clear the alert and synchronize the registration state, perform the following steps to resolve the mismatched synchronization state between the local VCF Operations instance and the VCF Business Services Console (BSC).

Force a clean registration by following below steps.

  1. Log in to the VCF Operations appliance via SSH as root and run the following connectivity checks to ensure the outbound licensing endpoints are not blocked by a firewall or deep-packet inspection:

    a. curl -v https://vcf.broadcom.com
    b. curl -v https://eapi.broadcom.com

  2. Delete or Unlink the Instance in the Cloud Portal.

    a. Navigate to the VCF Business Services Console (https://vcf.broadcom.com).
    b. Under License Management > VCF Operations Registrations, find the instance.
    c. Click the vertical ellipsis (three dots) and select Deactivate. Ensure the status changes to Deactivated or is removed entirely.

  3. Restart the Handshake Locally.

    a. Navigate back to the local VCF Operations UI.
    b. Navigate to License Management > Registration.
    c. Click the Actions menu at the top right and select Restart Registration. This clears any cached invalid activation tokens.

  4. Generate a Fresh Connected Token.

    a. Navigate back to the VCF Business Services Console and register the instance as a fresh Connected Mode deployment.
    b. Ensure to select the correct Broadcom Site ID that holds the active VVF/VCF entitlements.
    c. Copy the newly generated activation code and apply it to the local UI.

  5. If the issue persists, follow the below steps:

    a. Log in to the VCF Operations administration console as an administrator.
    b. Navigate to Administration > Licensing > Registration.
    c. Locate the Reporting Mode setting.
    d. Change the mode from Connected to Disconnected and click Save.
    e. Wait approximately 30 seconds to allow the local services to update.
    f. Change the mode back to Connected and click Save.
    g. Refresh the browser page. The warning alert should no longer be displayed.
