vCenter VPXD service crashes due to IOFilters with Dell RecoverPoint for VMs

Issue/Introduction

• The vCenter vpxd service crashes unexpectedly, resulting in the creation of core dump files. This issue typically occurs during virtual machine reconfiguration tasks or during backups when Dell RecoverPoint for VMs (RP4VM) is present.
• The vCenter vpxd service crashes and requires a manual restart.
• Log files end abruptly during a vim.VirtualMachine.reconfigure task.
• Core dump files are generated in /var/core/ (e.g., core.vpxd-worker.####).
• /var/log/vmware/vmon.log shows: Service exited unexpectedly. Crash count #.

Environment

• VMware vCenter Server 8.x
• Dell/EMC RecoverPoint for VMs (RP4VM) version 6.0.2.1 or earlier

Cause

The crash occurs because the HostIOFilter class is set to an unknown type.

VMware vCenter does not support IOFilters with an unknown class, leading to a pointer exception in the IndependentIofilterCallback::GetFilterClasses function during vpxd processing.

Resolution

Fixed in RecoverPoint 6.0.3.1 and higher.

1. Contact Dell/EMC support to upgrade RecoverPoint for VMs to version 6.0.3.1 or later to ensure the IOFilter class is correctly identified.
