HCX appliance IP address change without Service Mesh redeployment

Issue/Introduction

You need to re-IP your HCX Interconnect and Network Extension appliances without having to fully delete and redeploy the Service Mesh. This scenario typically occurs if the IP pool used in the Network Profile was not reserved in your internal IPAM, resulting in IP conflicts with other network resources.

Cause

The HCX internal IPAM tracks the initially assigned IP addresses as "in-use". Because of this, you cannot modify the IP pool within the Network Profile while the HCX appliances are actively using those leases.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, use a "profile-shift" workaround to release the current IP leases so the original Network Profile can be updated:

1. Ensure you have an alternate Network Profile (such as your Management profile) with at least one free IP address available to use as a temporary IP.

2. Edit your Compute Profile and move the affected service (e.g., Uplink or vMotion) to the temporary Network Profile.

3. Navigate to the Service Mesh tab and click Resync. The appliances will update and release their original IP addresses.

4. Once the original IP addresses are released, edit your original Network Profile to remove the old IPs and add your new IPAM-reserved range.

5. Edit the Compute Profile again to return the service to the original Network Profile.
