Issue/Introduction

This article provides informational guidance regarding the persistence of Secondary Collector configurations when planning an upgrade from VMware Aria Operations for Networks (AON) 6.14.x (specifically 6.14.2) to VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.x target versions.

It outlines the supported upgrade paths and explains how the Secondary Collector setup is handled depending on whether an in-place upgrade or a fresh installation is performed.

VMware Cloud Foundation 9.0.x

VMware Cloud Foundation 9.1.x

This article is intended to provide planning and deployment guidance. There is no underlying product issue or error associated with this document.

Resolution

When planning a transition from Aria Operations for Networks (AON) 6.14.x to a VCF 9.x environment, the persistence of existing Secondary Collector configuration depends entirely on the target version and the supported upgrade path.

Before proceeding, always verify the exact version compatibility using the VMware Interoperability Matrix

 

Please review the following scenarios based on your upgrade plan.

Example Scenario when AON version is 6.14.2:

Scenario 1: Upgrading to AON 9.1.x (Supported Upgrade Path)

Direct in-place upgrade from AON 6.14.2 to AON 9.0.x is not supported. If you are performing an in-place upgrade, you must upgrade directly to AON 9.1.x.

If you follow this supported upgrade path (6.14.2 to 9.1.x), the existing Secondary Collector configurations set up in 6.14.2 will persist. No new configuration or manual reconfiguration is required post-upgrade.

 

Scenario 2: Upgrading to VCF 9.0 (Fresh Installation Required)

If your deployment plan strictly requires migrating to VCF 9.0 (which corresponds to AON 9.0.x), an in-place upgrade from 6.14.2 is not supported. You must deploy a fresh instance of Aria Operations for Networks for 9.0.

Because this is a fresh installation rather than an in-place upgrade, previous configurations will not carry over. The Secondary Collector configurations will need to be manually re-configured on the newly deployed AON 9.0.x instance.
