Issue/Introduction

  • While importing the images to SDDC's Lifecycle Manager from vCenter , Extract Cluster Image task fails with an  error "Failed to export personality files from vCenter"

  • In the vSphere Lifecycle Manager log file (/var/log/vmware/vmware-updatemgr/vum-server/vmware-vum-server.log), errors similar to the following indicating an inaccessible depot and HTTP Error Code: 404 messages will show  when the system attempts to download specific VIBs from the SDDC Manager patch store:

Retry the operation after performing Sync Updates if the VCF Depot is registered to the vCenter.

Environment

  • VMware Cloud Foundation 9.x
  • VMware vSphere ESXI 9.x

Cause

This issue occurs because the required latest patches or VIBs are missing from the VMware Update Manager (vSphere Lifecycle Manager) repository. When vCenter attempts to fetch these files from the SDDC Manager depot, it results in an HTTP 404 (Not Found) error.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, ensure that the offline repository and local vCenter caches are completely up to date.

  1. Verify Offline Repositories: Ensure that the offline repository connected to your SDDC Manager (or vCenter Server) is fully synchronized and up to date.
  2. Sync the Latest Patches (Offline Environments): If it is an offline environment, use the VCF Download Tool to download and sync the latest patches.
  3. Sync Updates in vCenter:
    • Log in to the vSphere Client.
    • Navigate to vSphere Lifecycle Manager.
    • Go to Settings > Patch Setup.
    • Click Sync Updates to force vCenter to refresh its local cache from the SDDC Manager depot.
  4. Re-try the ESXI upgrade now, it should be successful.
