Hitachi Virtualization Management Setting prevents new LUN discovery during rescan in VMware ESXi

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Newly provisioned LUN is not discovered after a storage rescan.
• Existing LUNs from the same array are visible and healthy.
• hostd.log shows the rescan task completes successfully without errors.
• Packet captures show REPORT LUNS response from the array does not include the new LUN ID.

Environment

• VMware ESXi 8.x
• VMware ESXi 9.x

Cause

The inability to discover newly provisioned LUNs is caused by the Hitachi storage array failing to advertise the devices during the SCSI REPORT LUNS operation. This behavior occurs when the "Virtualization Management Setting" remains enabled on the Logical Devices (LDEVs) assigned to the Meta Resource following a Global-Active Device (GAD) or Virtual Storage Machine (VSM) configuration.

Consequently, Virtual LDEV IDs (FF:FF) are assigned to the affected LDEVs instead of their actual LDEV IDs. This prevents the storage array from including the newly provisioned LUNs in the REPORT LUNS response.

Resolution

Engage the storage vendor (Hitachi) to further investigate and resolve the LUN advertisement issue on the storage array.
