The vSphere Update Manager service crashes almost immediately after being restarted

Issue/Introduction

• VMware vSphere Update manager stops regularly (daily) as the vSphere Update Manager service is in stop state and requires a manual restart.
  
  
  
• When the Update Manager Service crashes, it immediately records core dumps located in either /storage/core/ or /var/core as seen below:
  -rw-rw-r-- 1 svc.datamover support  core.updatemgr-worke.XXXX

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 8.x

Cause

Network path problem specific to fresh, VUM-initiated direct connections to this host as new connection attempted from VUM leaves no trace whatsoever on the ESXi side but the pre-existing management tunnel keeps working fine in parallel.

Resolution

• Engage your internal networking team to fix the issue as there is some component between the vCenter and the ESXi blocking the traffic.
  
  
  • This could be either a physical switch, the DMZ boundary firewall/router, or some intermediate security appliance between the vCenter/VUM network and this host's subnet is likely dropping packets specifically for /lifecycle-api.
