Issue/Introduction

Users may observe that specific data elements in the MICS HARDVA (Direct Access Device Activity) file, such as DVASIRPT (zHyperLink Read Requests), contain values of zero even though the RMF component is processing SMF record types 70-79 correctly.

Cause

These specific data elements are designed to track metrics related to IBM zHyperLink technology. If the values are consistently zero, it typically indicates that the necessary hardware or software configurations are not in place to generate this specific data.

The two primary reasons for zero values are:

• Hardware Absence: The environment does not have zHyperLink hardware connections configured between the mainframes and the storage units.
• Configuration: If the hardware exists, the zHyperLink feature has not been enabled or utilized within the SMS storage class policies.

Resolution

If you see zero values in these fields, verify your hardware and software configuration:

1. Verify Hardware: Confirm with your storage or systems administration team whether zHyperLink hardware is installed and physically connected.
2. Check SMS Policies: Review your SMS storage class definitions to ensure that zHyperLink is explicitly enabled for the volumes being monitored.
3. Confirm SMF Records: Ensure that the RMF monitor is active and capturing the extended hardware statistics required for these metrics.

If zHyperLink is not part of your current infrastructure, zero is the correct and expected value for these data elements. This does not indicate a MICS maintenance or compatibility issue.
