Issue/Introduction

During the VCF 9.1 upgrade sequence, after deploying the VCF Management Services and the License Server, the following issues occured:

  • The following alert message is displayed in the UI under [Manage] > [Licensing] > [Licenses & Registration] > [vCenter Systems]: "1 failed assignment"
  • Duplicate or incorrect licenses are displayed under the [Manage] > [Licensing] > [Licenses & Registration] > [Licenses] section.

Environment

VMware Cloud Foundation 9.1

Cause

These issues can occur if a License Server was previously deployed in an incorrect sequence and subsequently deleted.
This leaves residual, outdated license registration data within the system, resulting in the synchronization failure.

Resolution

Refresh the licenses and reassign the primary license to the vCenter.

  1. Login to VCF Operations UI
  2. Navigate to the [Manage] tab > [Licensing] > [Licenses & Registration].
  3. Click Refresh Licenses located at the top right of the screen.
  4. In the lower section under vCenter Server systems, select the checkbox for the target vCenter Server.
  5. Click Assign Primary License.
  6. Select the current valid License Server from the list.
  7. Click Assign.
  8. Verify that the "successful assignments" banner is displayed in the UI and that only one correct license is now shown.
