Determining if an NSX segment has attached resources prior to removal

Issue/Introduction

When managing network segments in VMware NSX, you may need to verify if a segment is actively in use before attempting to remove it.

Resolution

You can determine the operational status of a segment by monitoring the ports/interfaces metric within the NSX Manager. To verify and manage segment usage, follow these steps:

• Log in to the NSX Manager UI.
• Navigate to Networking > Segments.
• Locate the segment you wish to inspect and check the Ports / Interfaces column:

• If the count is zero: You can safely proceed with deleting the segment, as no resources are attached.
• If the count is greater than zero: You must identify and disconnect all attached resources before the segment can be removed. 
• If the count is non-zero but no VMs are visible in vCenter, check for stale logical ports or orphaned VIFs that may still be registered to the segment. For more information on the same refer to the following KB: 371939
