Troubleshooting Stalled Maintenance Mode Tasks on HPE SimpliVity Hosts

Issue/Introduction

Attempting to enter Maintenance Mode on an ESXi host in an HPE SimpliVity cluster, the task progress bar is stalled displaying the following message: "Waiting for all virtual machines to be powered off or suspended or migrated. In a DRS cluster check the Faults page on the DRS tab for troubleshooting"

Cause

HPE SimpliVity hosts require a specific workflow because the OmniStack Virtual Controller (OVC) VM is pinned to the physical hardware.

Resolution

Prerequisites: Before shutting down a Virtual Controller on an HPE OmniStack host:

1. Verify there are no pending tasks.
2. Ensure that the virtual machines are in HA compliance.

Resolution:

1. Evacuate Guest Workloads:
   1. Manually vMotion all guest VMs to other hosts.
   2. The OmniStack Virtual Controller (OVC) VM must remain running on the target host during this phase.
2. Contact HP Support to gracefully shut down the OVC VM.
3. Enter Maintenance Mode:
   1. Right-click the ESXi host and select Maintenance Mode > Enter Maintenance Mode.
   2. Uncheck the option to move powered-off VMs (the OVC VM must stay on the host).
