"Test Failover" operations for large replicated virtual machines fail with the error "Operation canceled due to an unexpected error"

Issue/Introduction

When attempting to perform a "Test Failover" on a very large replicated virtual machine (e.g., several terabytes in size) within VMware Cloud Director Availability, the operation frequently fails.

Environment

VMware Cloud Director Availability 4.7.X

Cause

This issue occurs because there is insufficient free capacity on the destination vCenter Server datastore to accommodate the large virtual machine and its associated overhead during the failover process.

Resolution

• Review the total provisioned size of the replicated virtual machine.
• Check the available capacity on the destination datastore in the target vCenter Server.
• Expand the target datastore or select a different datastore with adequate overhead capacity.
• For example, to successfully replicate and test failover for a 13 TB virtual machine, the available free space on the destination datastore should be approximately 18 TB.
