Issue/Introduction

An administrator attempts to send email traffic to or through Symantec Messaging Gateway (SMG) using the extended SMTP (ESMTP) chunking command BDAT, or notices that the CHUNKING extension is missing from the EHLO response banner.

Does Symantec Messaging Gateway (SMG) support the BDAT command or the CHUNKING ESMTP extension?

Resolution

No. Symantec Messaging Gateway does not support the BDAT command or the CHUNKING ESMTP extension (as defined in RFC 3030).

When an upstream Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) connects to SMG and issues an EHLO greeting, SMG will not advertise CHUNKING in its capability list.

If a specific sender is failing to deliver mail due to this limitation, ensure that the sender's mail server configuration is set to honor the recipient server's advertised EHLO extensions and safely fall back to traditional SMTP DATA transmission.
