Issue/Introduction

The SDDC Manager task "Configure VLAN-backed NSX for cluster" fails or stalls.
This task is typically triggered during an Inventory Sync operation or when adding/configuring clusters within a workload domain.

  • The task remains in a 'FAILED' or 'PENDING' state in the SDDC Manager Dashboard.
  • NSX Manager shows that hosts are correctly prepared and the Transport Node Collection status is healthy
  • Retrying the task from SDDC Manager fails repeatedly with generic orchestration errors

Environment

VMware Cloud Foundation 9.x

Cause

This issue occurs when the Inventory Sync process encounters a state inconsistency between the live NSX-T deployment and the SDDC Manager's internal inventory database.

During the sync, SDDC Manager validates the status of the NSX-T cluster. If the cluster is not explicitly marked as 'ACTIVE' in the nsxt_cluster table of the database, the orchestration engine cannot verify the configuration, causing the "Configure VLAN-backed NSX" task to fail.

Resolution

To resolve this state mismatch, the inventory database must be manually updated to reflect the correct status of the NSX-T cluster.
