Issue/Introduction

This article provides guidance on using VMware vMotion to migrate VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) Usage Meter 9.x appliances between ESXi hosts.

Environment

VCF Usage Meter 9.x

Resolution

vMotion is fully supported for VCF Usage Meter 9.x virtual appliances.

Administrators may perform live migrations of the Usage Meter VM to different ESXi hosts during vCenter Server upgrades, host maintenance, or resource balancing. The application is designed to handle the standard migration process without data loss or service interruption.

While vMotion is supported, Broadcom recommends the following best practices to ensure continuous metering accuracy:

  • Schedule during low traffic: Perform migrations during periods of low activity to minimize the risk of polling timeouts during the sub-second network switchover.
  • Verify time synchronization: Ensure the target ESXi host is synchronized with the same NTP source as the Usage Meter appliance. Time drift between hosts can lead to inconsistencies in hourly usage reporting.
  • Confirm resource availability: Verify that the destination host has sufficient CPU and memory resources to meet the Usage Meter appliance requirements.
  • Monitor post-migration: Briefly monitor the Usage Meter web interface after the task completes to ensure that all metered products (e.g., vCenter Server, NSX) maintain a "Connected" status.
