Issue/Introduction

• Attempts to migrate a virtual machine (VM) using Storage vMotion between datastores within the same datastore cluster fail with below error:
  
• The following error is observed in vCenter: A specified parameter was not correct: spec.diskLocator[].datastoreId
• The vCenter environment contains two datacenters, and the affected datastores are shared between both datacenters.
• Attempting to deploy a new VM by selecting a datastore within the same datastore cluster in the primary datacenter results in the same error.
• Attempting to deploy a new VM in the secondary datacenter using the same datastore cluster completes successfully.

VMware vCenter 8.x

Cause

Storage DRS is architected to function exclusively within a single datacenter and does not support cross-datacenter storage resource management. When a datastore spans multiple datacenters, Storage DRS encounters boundary conflicts in storage resource management, resulting in "Storage DRS faults."

Resolution

Presenting VMFS datastores across different datacenters while Storage DRS is enabled is an unsupported configuration. To resolve this issue, execute one of the following options:

• Disable Storage DRS for datastores that are mounted across multiple datacenters.
• Use Backend LUN or Storage-Level Data Copy/Mirroring to maintain storage consistency across different locations.
• Manually Manage Storage Placement post disabling Storage DRS.
