SDDC Manager Displays Missing Physical Adapter During vSphere Distributed Switch Uplink Mapping

Issue/Introduction

When attempting to commission and add multiple ESXi hosts to a workload domain in VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), the host selection screen correctly shows all available network adapters (e.g., 6 NICs). However, navigating to the vSphere Distributed Switch (VDS) configuration window to map uplinks to physical adapters on the host displays n-1 adapters (e.g., showing only 5 out of 6 adapters).

Cause

This issue occurs because one of the physical network adapters (vmnic) on one of the ESXi hosts being commissioned is in a "down" or disconnected state at the hardware level. SDDC Manager cannot map an uplink to a physical adapter that lacks an active physical link status.

Resolution

• Abort the current multi-host commissioning workflow in the SDDC Manager UI.

• Instead of selecting all hosts simultaneously, restart the process by selecting and commissioning the ESXi hosts one by one.

• Monitor the VDS uplink mapping stage for each host to isolate exactly which specific host is missing the physical adapter.

• Log into the identified ESXi Host Client, navigate to Networking > Physical NICs, and verify the link status of the adapters.

• Work with your hardware vendor or datacenter network team to troubleshoot and resolve the physical link down issue on the affected host.

The host commissioning process inside the SDDC Manager interface may then be safely resumed for the remediated host or collective host batch.
