Issue/Introduction

Configure an email alert notification to trigger 8 days before the "root" password expires for vCenter Server and ESXi hosts so that proactive action can be taken.

Cause

In VCF Operations, alerts are based on Symptom Definitions. To generate such an alert, the respective symptom definition for password expiration must be created first.

Resolution

For the vCenter Server root password:

This is a known user experience limitation. Currently, there is no out-of-the-box property to monitor the vCenter Server root password expiration. Log in to VCF Operations and navigate to Configuration > Symptom Definition, select the vCenter object type, and look under Properties, no such symptom is found.


Therefore, an alert cannot be created for the vCenter Server root password.

For the ESXi root password:

1. Log in to VCF Operations.
2. Navigate to Configuration > Symptom Definition.
3. Select the target Object type (e.g., Host System / ESXi).
4. Under Symptom Type, select Properties.
5. Use the No. of Days to Expire property to configure the symptom definition (e.g., set the threshold to 8 days).
   
6. Save the symptom definition.
7. Navigate to the Alert Definitions and create a new alert based on the symptom just configured.
