VCF Operations

Issue/Introduction

  • Unable to import upgraded Private License file to VCF Operations
  • Error seen in the UI: "The license file is invalid. Generate a new license file in the VCF Business Services console and upload it here"
  • VCF Operations was upgraded from 9.0 to 9.1
  • The VCF OPs id was then updated in the Business Services Console portal
  • After these steps the new License File cannot be applied and throws the error: "The license file is invalid. Generate a new license file in the VCF Business Services console and upload it here"
  • As a troubleshooting step the VCF Operations was re-registered in Disconnected mode on the Business Services Console
  • Internal API was used to generate a Registration file
  • This Registration file was used to upgrade the license from "PRIVATE 9.0"  to "Disconnected 9.1"
  • The import of the license file still fails
  • The /storage/log/vcops/log/license-usage-plugin contains entries similar to:

    ERROR license-usage-plugin ###### [ops@[######] threadId="[<THREAD_ID>]" threadName="[<THREAD_NAME>]" operationId="[<OPERATION_ID>]"] [com.vmware.vrops.license.usage.service.LicenseUsageService.checkIfMaxSupportedVersionIsExceeded] - The version of the application 9.1.0.0 is incompatible with the version in supplied license 9.0
ERROR license-usage-plugin ###### [ops@[######] threadId="[<THREAD_ID>]" threadName="[<THREAD_NAME>]" operationId="[<OPERATION_ID>]"] [com.vmware.vrops.license.usage.service.LicenseUsageService.isOpsVersionGreaterThanEntitlementVersion] - Entitlement version validation failed ! com.vmware.vrops.license.usage.exception.LicenseUsageRuntimeException: The version of the application is incompatible with the supplied license.

Environment

VCF 9.1.x

Cause

  • Before upgrading from VCF 9.0 to 9.1.x you are required to update the max VCF Version of your Private License file to 9.1 ( see the "Upgrade VCF Operations from Version 9.0 to Version 9.1" section of the documentation here)
  • Re-registering the VCF Operation in Disconnected mode in the BSC is not a supported action in this context.
  • It causes the VCF OPs id in the BSC to change and this id cannot be used to import the new license file.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, you must reactivate the correct VCF Operations instance in the Business Services Console (BSC), update the version to 9.1, and assign the appropriate license to the newly generated license server.

Follow these steps:

  1. Retrieve the VCF Operations ID: Access the VCF Operations UI and go to Manage > Licensing > Licensing & Registration. From there, click Manage to open the Registration Details page, and copy the VCF Ops ID (e.g., 09#####-fc##-41##-a1##-546###########).

  2. Locate the Registration in the BSC Portal: Log in to the BSC portal and navigate to the VCF Operation Registrations page. Search for the copied VCF Operation ID.

    • Note: If the entry is not visible, click Manage Columns to enable the "VCF Operation ID" column. Then, click the Status filter, check the box for Deactivated, and search for the ID again.

  3. Activate the Registration: Once you have located the correct VCF Operation entry, click to Re-Activate it.

  4. Edit the Private Registration: Go to the VCF Operations Details page. In the left-hand menu, click ACTIONS > Edit Private Registration.

  5. Update the Version: Change both the Max VCF Version and Licensed Environment fields to 9.1.

  6. Assign Licenses and Download: Assign the appropriate licenses for both VCF Operations and the license server. Provide the correct public keys for both components (providing incorrect keys will cause the previous errors to return) and download the new license file.

  7. Import the License File: Import the newly downloaded license file into VCF Operations. The system should now successfully apply the license and display version 9.1.

Important: If your VCF Operations instance is not in a deactivated state and you continue to experience this issue, please open a Support Case with Broadcom support and reference this KB article (KB 445137) for further assistance.
