Error: No compatible storage policy found during NSX-vDefend SSP deployment

Issue/Introduction

When deploying the Security Services Platform (SSP) Instance using the SSP-Installer OVA, the vCenter selection screen may fail to list any storage policies in the pull-down menu. This prevents the deployment from proceeding to the next stage.

• The SSP-Installer wizard populates Data Center and Cluster fields correctly.
• The Storage Policy pull-down menu is empty or displays: "No compatible storage policy found. Select another datacenter or cluster."

• The vCenter-MGMT cluster leverages external non-vSAN storage (VMFS or NFS).

Environment

• VMware vDefend Security Services Platform (SSP) 5.1.x
• VMware vCenter 9.x

Cause

The SSP-Installer wizard uses vSphere policy-based storage. If the target cluster does not use vSAN, and no manually created storage policies exist that are compatible with the external datastores, the wizard will have no valid policies to display.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, create a storage policy compatible with the external storage:

1. Log in to the vSphere Client.
2. Navigate to Shortcuts > Policies and Profiles > VM Storage Policies.
3. Click Create.
4. Provide a name (e.g., "SSP-External-Storage-Policy").
   
   
   
   
5. In the Policy structure section, select Enable host-based usage rules or use Tag-based placement if the datastores are tagged.
   • Note: Ensure the rules match the capabilities of the VMFS or NFS datastores used by the cluster.
6. Complete the wizard and ensure the policy shows as "Compatible" with the intended datastores.
7. Restart the SSP-Installer deployment wizard.
8. Select the newly created policy from the pull-down menu.
