Issue/Introduction

We are running Spectrum 24.3.13 on Win server. We are currently monitoring around 2000 servers through ICMP and SNMP based on the IP address. Those 2000 servers are changing new IP addresses but will keep the same name that currently in Spectrum. We want to know if Spectrum can be configured to ping\poll those 2000 servers based on DNS name so we can avoid rerunning Spectrum discovery on those 2000 servers.

Environment

DX NetOps Spectrum 10.3+

Resolution

Starting from the 10.3 release, you can trigger DNS lookup to resolve the correct IP address for the following issues:

  • Device Contact Lost
  • Duplicate IP or model
  • Management Agent Lost
  • Device IP swap (Schedule DNS Lookup)

To enable DNS lookup in DX NetOps Spectrum, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to OneClick console.
  2. Click the Explorer tab.
  3. Select the device model on which you want to enable the DNS lookup.
  4. Click the 'Attributes' tab in the Component Details panel.
  5. Search for the 'do_dns_lookup' attribute.
  6. Change the attribute value to 'Yes'.Default: No


The DNS lookup feature is enabled for the selected model.

NOTE:  Though the 'do_dns_lookup' attribute is set on a device, if the ‘IP redundancy’ is also enabled, it does not trigger the DNS Lookup.

 

In DX NetOps Spectrum, 0x11d2c is the Attribute ID for RedundancyEnabled.

This attribute determines whether Spectrum will attempt to use a device's Redundancy Preferred Addresses list to maintain contact if the primary IP address becomes unreachable Device Configuration Policy.

  • Value = Yes (Enabled):Spectrum automatically switches to an available redundant IP address if the primary fails.
  • Value = No (Disabled):Spectrum will only attempt to contact the device via its primary address.

Note: When this is enabled, it overrides the do_dns_lookup attribute, preventing DNS lookups from being triggered DHCP Support.
