Issue/Introduction

SHD appliance root password is expired or not working.

Environment

VMware Skyline Health Diagnostics (All versions).

Resolution

Follow the instructions below to reset root password for Skyline Health Diagnostics (SHD) appliance.

  1. Restart the Skyline health diagnostics - Photon OS virtual machine and launch the console.

  2. When the Photon OS splash screen appears as it restarts, type the letter 'e'.

  3. In the GNU GRUB edit menu add the following parameter 'rw init=/bin/bash' as mentioned below screenshot.

     4. Once the parameter is added type "F10" to exit the GRUB screen. This would boot into the prompt below.

    5. At the command prompt, type "passwd" (Enter the temporary password here to reset the root account).

   6. Then reboot with the command "reboot -f" to boot the appliance.

   7. Once the appliance is booted up, validate by logging into the appliance using root user with new password from console.
