Issue/Introduction

  • The vSphere Client > Licensing > Assets tab shows a lower number of protected VMs than what is actually configured in Protection Groups.
  • SRM reports "Evaluation" status even after a valid permanent license has been applied to vCenter.
  • The VM count does not update automatically after adding new VMs to a Protection Group.

Environment

VMware Live Recovery (SRM) 9.x, 8.x

Cause

This issue typically occurs under the following conditions:

  1. Single-Site Licensing: The SRM license has been applied to only one vCenter in the site pair. SRM requires the license to be present on both sites to calculate and exchange usage data.
  2. Stale Metadata: The SRM appliances are still caching metadata from a previous evaluation license.
  3. Synchronization Delay: The site pair has not synchronized the licensing assets since the protection groups were modified.

Resolution

  1. Assign License to Both Sites:

    • Navigate to Administration > Licensing > Licenses in the vSphere Client for both the Protected and Recovery sites.
    • Ensure the same (or equivalent) SRM license key is assigned to the "Site Recovery Manager" asset on both vCenter Servers.
  2. Reconfigure SRM Appliances:

    • Log in to the Site Recovery Manager Appliance Management Interface (AMI) (https://:5480) for both appliances.
    • Click Summary > Reconfigure.
    • Complete the wizard to refresh the connection between SRM and vCenter. This forces SRM to re-read the assigned license from the vCenter inventory.
  3. Reconnect Site Pair:

    • In the vSphere Client, navigate to Site Recovery > Open Site Recovery.
    • Select the Site Pair and click Actions > Reconnect.
    • Provide the credentials for the remote site to force a metadata exchange.
  4. Verify Asset Usage:

    • Go to Administration > Licensing > Assets.
    • The "Used" column for the Site Recovery Manager solution should now correctly reflect the total number of VMs included in all Protection Groups.
