Issue/Introduction

  • When utilizing VMware Cloud Director Availability (VCDA), synchronization for virtual machine replication fails to complete.
  • Attempting to reconfigure the replication task results in the following error message:

"The virtual machine is not configured for replication"

  • Additionally, a warning is observed during the initial configure task:

"The source VM '<VM_name>' was already configured for replication, possibly by another replication solution. The source VM is unconfigured and then re-confiugred"

Environment

VMware Cloud Director Availability 4.x

Cause

This issue occurs when a third-party backup or alternate replication application is currently utilizing Host-Based Replication (HBR) for the source virtual machine, causing an architectural conflict.

Resolution

  1. Identify any third-party backup or replication solutions currently interacting with the affected source virtual machine.

  2. Disable the conflicting application or service from utilizing Host-Based Replication (HBR) on the source virtual machine.

  3. Reconfigure the replication task for the virtual machine in VCDA.
