VMware vSphere Kubernetes Service

Issue/Introduction

  • When attempting to update the Supervisor (e.g., from version v1.31.6 to v1.32.9), the upgrade fails with the following configuration error:

Incoming component 'kubernetes' version v1.32.9+vmware.2-fips is incompatible with current running Supervisor Service 'tkg.vsphere.vmware.com' version 3.4.1-embedded+v1.33. Upgrading the Supervisor will make the installed service incompatible.

  • Source Supervisor: v1.31.6 (vsc9.0.1.0-24953340)
  • Target Supervisor: v1.32.9 (vsc9.1.0.0-25370922)

  • Active VKS Service: VKS 3.4.1-embedded (v1.33)

Cause

Supervisor version v1.32.9 is only compatible with VKS version 3.6.1 or higher as per the Product Interoperability Matrix. The upgrade is blocked because the environment is running the legacy 3.4.1-embedded service, which cannot support the v1.32.9 Kubernetes components.

Resolution

Upgrade the VKS service to version 3.6.2 before initiating the Supervisor update. Version 3.6.2 is recommended to avoid topology reconciliation issues found in version 3.6.1 (Reference: KB 432505).

Sequential Upgrade Steps:

  1. Download the VKS 3.6.2 YAML from the Broadcom Support Portal.
  2. Register a New Version (3.6.2): Follow the procedures to Register a New Version of the TKG Service in the Supervisor management.
  3. Upgrade the VKS Version: Follow the steps to Upgrade the TKG Service Version to 3.6.2.
  4. Verify the VKS Service status shows as Healthy in the Supervisor Services tab.
  5. Proceed with the Supervisor version update to 1.32.9.
