Issue/Introduction

This article describes an issue where changes to the settings of a vGPU virtual machine become impossible when attempting to do so on the Host Client UI.

When attempting to edit the settings of a vGPU virtual machine on the ESXi host, an error banner without a message is displayed.

Furthermore, the SAVE button is grayed out.


The situation when this issue occurs is shown in the following diagram.

Environment

VMware ESXi 8.0
VMware ESX 9.0

Cause

An unexpected exception occurs in the UI when the following parameters are included in the vmx file of a vGPU virtual machine.

pciPassthru0.virtualDev = "vmiop"

Resolution

The issue does not occur when using ESX 9.1, which features a redesigned Host Client UI.

The workaround for ESXi 8.0/9.0 is as follows:
Edit the virtual machine settings using the vSphere Client UI.
