Ping Adapter: Connectivity monitoring between cluster nodes

Issue/Introduction

• Cluster nodes randomly lose connection.
• Need to monitor network latency or packet loss between nodes.
• Standard VM property metrics (collected every 24 hours) are insufficient for timely network alerting.
• Cluster node(s) is down

Environment

VMware Aria Operations 8.18.x

Resolution

Follow these steps to enable and configure the Ping Adapter for node monitoring:

1. Activate the Ping Adapter

1. Navigate to Integrations > Repository.
2. Locate the Ping Adapter and click Activate.

2. Configure a Ping Adapter Instance

Create the same amount of adapter instances as you have nodes in the cluster. Each adapter instance will target all nodes FQDN and IP address. Make sure to select a different node as its collector.

1. Go to Integrations and click Add Account for the Ping Adapter.
2. Target the FQDNs (Fully Qualified Domain Names) and the IP of all the nodes in the cluster except for the one that will be set as the collector on this adapter instance.
3. Select the node not in the list of targets in step 2 as a collector for this adapter instance.
   
   Note: Each adapter instance should have a different collector from the nodes it is testing. This will track metrics from the collector to each of the nodes. With multiple adapter instances, this allows Aria Operations to track connectivity from each node to all the others.
