Event Configuration: Conditional Alarm Severity for ocumEventState Traps in DX NetOps Spectrum

Issue/Introduction

This article describes how to configure DX NetOps Spectrum to automatically generate and close alerts based on the ocumEventState variable in traps received from OnCommand Unified Manager. This is achieved using the Conditional Alarm Severity feature and Event Variable Discriminators to ensure accurate alarm lifecycle management for specific resources.

Cause

Standard trap processing may not interpret string-based state variables (like "new" or "obsolete-um") as open/clear triggers without custom configuration.

Resolution

To configure an event to automatically generate and close alerts based on a variable value, follow these steps:

1. Open the Event Configuration Editor from the Tools > Utilities menu in OneClick.
2. Locate the event code (e.g., 0xfff001de) associated with the trap.
3. Under the Alarms tab, set the Severity to Conditional.
4. Set the Event Variable to the index corresponding to the status (e.g., variable 16 for ocumEventState).
5. In the Event Variable Discriminators field, enter the ID of the variable that identifies the specific resource (e.g., 8 for ocumEventSourceResourceKey). This ensures that an "obsolete-um" trap for one volume does not clear an alarm for a different volume on the same device.
6. Click Configure to create a new mapping file.
7. Add entries to map the trap string values to Spectrum severities:
   • Value: new -> Severity: Critical (or desired level)
   • Value: obsolete-um -> Severity: Cleared
8. Save the changes in the Event Configuration Editor.
9. In OneClick, locate the VNM model, go to the SpectroSERVER Control subview, and click Update Event Configuration to apply the changes.
