Error: vSphere Replication VMs stuck in moving state

Issue/Introduction

• Virtual Machine replication status is stuck in a "Moving" state.
• Reconfiguration actions are greyed out or fail.
• Network mappings tests to the recovery site remain in a "Testing" state indefinitely.
• In the vSphere Replication appliance logs, the following task may be observed failing to complete: BrokerTokenVerificationSynchronizer.

Environment

• vSphere Replication 9.x
• VMware Site Recovery Manager
• ESXi 7.x, 8.x

Cause

The hbrsrv service on the destination ESXi host is hung or unresponsive. This prevents the BrokerTokenVerificationSynchronizer task from authorizing communication over port 32032, which blocks replication movements and network mapping tests.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, restart the Host Based Replication service on the affected destination ESXi hosts in mapping:

1. Log in to the destination ESXi host via SSH or the Host Client.
2. Run the following command to restart the service:

   /etc/init.d/hbrsrv restart

3. Verify the service status:

   /etc/init.d/hbrsrv status

4. Monitor the vSphere Replication interface; the VMs should transition from "Moving" to an "OK" state.

These steps can also be performed by restarting hbrsrv service from the vCenter UI:
In the vCenter UI, select Host > Configure > Services and select the service hbrsrv to restart
