Autosys Workload Automation

Issue/Introduction

Does Broadcom have specific recommendations regarding adjusting the Sybase "default thread pool" setting for an AutoSys environment?

Environment

  • AutoSys Workload Automation 24.2

  • Database: Sybase ASE (Adaptive Server Enterprise)

Resolution

AutoSys opens a predetermined number of connections to the Sybase database instance based on the DB_CONNECTIONS parameter configured at the startup time of both the primary/shadow Schedulers and the Application Server.

Broadcom does not enforce a rigid restriction on the Sybase database engine's internal thread configuration. If the Database Administrator (DBA) determines a need to optimize or make adjustments to Sybase's "default thread pool" to accommodate the incoming connection volumes or underlying hardware layout, they are permitted to do so.

Best Practice Recommendation: Before deploying any modifications to the Sybase thread pool in a Production environment, it is highly recommended to implement and validate the changes within a designated Test/UAT environment. This ensures you can confirm that the adjustments have no negative performance impact or stability regressions on the AutoSys infrastructure.

Next Steps / Related Suggestions

  • Review Connection Limits: Ensure that the total maximum connections allowed on the Sybase engine (number of user connections) is higher than the sum of all DB_CONNECTIONS specified across all AutoSys Schedulers, Application Servers, and Web UI (WCC) components to avoid login rejection issues.

  • Monitor Engine Utilization: Use Sybase administrative tools (such as sp_sysmon) in your test environment while running a high volume of AutoSys jobs to gauge whether thread pool adjustments successfully alleviate engine bottlenecks.
